Doran's Key Claims

  1. Iteration is not limited to univariate/logical structures.
  2. Interdependency is not limited to univariate/logical structures.
  3. There are two types of interdependency: nuclear and linear.
  4. Structures can be classified in terms of distinctive features: ± iteration, ± nuclearity and ± linearity.

The first claim rests on a stipulation in Halliday (1965) which Halliday soon dropped.

The second claim rests on misconstruing a structure marker as a unit in a unit complex.

The third claim derives from Martin's misconstrual of experiential vs logical structure in terms of hypotaxis vs parataxis (see here).

The fourth claim rests on the previous three.
